Jackie Appiah to venture into music

If it happens that Jackie Appiah goes into music as being rumoured in some quarters, it would not be a surprise as several artistes have been known to practice another form of art different from what they are nobly recognized to have made a name from.

The Hollywood’s long list include Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Will Smith, Queen Latifah, Mariah Carey, Ice Cube, Ice T, Tina Turner, Frank Sinatra to name but a few of these corss-over showbiz personalities.

The phenomenon seems not too different from the Ghanaian situation when some musicians have one time or the other found themselves acting or vice versa. Rama Brew, Kojo Dadson, Lord Kenya, Mzbel and Ofori Amponsah have been known for this.

It must be said that while some have been as successful with the new genre as they were with the one they are known for, some also could not make it as big with the new one as they did with the previous one. Showbiz has learned that another actress who is likely to try her voice at singing is the delectable Jackie Appiah, who though a very successful actress both in Ghana and Nigeria has not been known to have done anything commercially with music.

Appiah is a screen goddess who has done it all and seen it all as far as acting booth on television and in movies are concerned. Having cut her teeth on television with Things We Do For Love when she played the role of Enyonam Blagogee then she took part in Tentacles, Games People Play and other TV series.

Akon, P-Square, Tiwa Savage & Co Join Banky W For Birthday Gig!

Banky W, Akon

Banky W’s surprise birthday party on Tuesday March 27, 2012 at The Grotto in Victoria Island, Lagos brought out a large number of A- list entertainers.

With so much love from fans on twitter, facebook and elsewhere, and a guest list that included Akon, Psquare, MI, Tiwa Savage, Kel, Ini Edo, Skales, Toolz and others, the R&B giant and EME Chairman had a time of his life!

“Even when I gbagaun, I don’t get half as many mentions as this ooh…. Thank you so much for the birthday wishes… God bless” the singer said to his fans on twitter, earlier in the day.

Before The Grotto surprise party put together by his friends, Banky told journalists in Lagos he plans to dedicate more of his time to “helping young talents grow and do all I can to make the journey easier for talented young people out there trying to build a career in music”.

“As I grow older, it’s becoming very important for me to play my little part in developing this industry; to play my own role in empowering our youths, and in extension, the nation. I’ll be happy if I can help more and more upcoming talents escape the hurdles I passed through while coming up. Everyone sees Banky W, Wizkid, 2face, Psquare or D’banj – but people forget that for each one of us that makes it, there are dozens others who fell by the way side; most of them could have made it if only they got more support. I made it to where I am because of the love and support from the media, my label, fans, promoters and my family. I think it’s my responsibility, to make sure I support those coming behind. That’s what I’ve done with Wizkid. We’re working on Skales now, and many more are on the way”.

Banky W’s protégé WizKid was missing in action from his mentor’s “Lagos party”, but he had a good reason- he was away in America having series of sit downs and focused discussions with prominent African-Americans and promoters ahead of the forthcoming EME tour. “Happy Birthday to my big bro, Banky W. God bless you more Wizkid wrote in a Twitter shout out to Mr W.

Banky W’s third Nigerian album titled R&BW is expected later this year.

THE.FOLAKE! RETURNS WITH POIGNANT SELF-PRODUCED NEW SINGLE TITLED “EHEN EHEN OKAY OKAY”

After débuting at number one on the Afro Pop charts (CD Baby) with her self-titled debut single “The.Folake”, award-winning actress, model and musician THE.FOLAKE! returns with a more sombre and serious brand new single titled “Ehen Ehen Okay Okay”.
Drawing influences from her Spoken Word and Poetry roots, this self-produced single sees The.Folake! speaking candidly about the ills and “wahala” that her Nigerian people are forced to deal with and live through on a daily basis - bribery, corruption, lack of electricity and the recent fuel subsidy removal among other trials and tribulations.
Offered up as a free download to everyone willing to listen, “Ehen Ehen Okay Okay” speaks directly of the times we’re living in now, not only in Nigeria but in several parts of the world.

Growing up in Lagos as the youngest of 19 children, The.Folake! - real name Folake Olowofoyeku - always dreamt of delving into the arts as a musician but her now late parents however insisted on her becoming a lawyer. With the opportunity to move to New York City to study, Folake left Nigeria and while in NYC, focused her artistic endeavours on a BA (Hon) in Theatre and a Diploma in Audio Engineering. With a brief career competing in the NCAA league for her College’s Basketball team, Folake began her career as a versatile actress.
She earned a Best Actress Award for her lead role in When They Could Fly at the prestigious ReelHeART International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada and over the years, her acting career has flourished, from numerous stage productions to Film and Television, leading to her role in the Jodi Foster-directed The Beaver. Folake proceeded to make several appearances on the Law and Order franchise, 30-Rock and White Collar. Her voice has been utilized for voice-over campaigns with The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, The Coca-Cola Company, Money Gram and Emirates Airline and her latest film - a 3D horror/comedy film - titled Hellbenders is due to be released in US Theatres in March 2012.
With a strong foot in the acting world, Folake changed the course of her career to pursue wholeheartedly her passion for Music. Musically inspired by Michael Jackson, M.I.A, Slash and Fela Kuti, The.Folake! is creating music that induces a party atmosphere and creates a voice to the realities faced day to day in Nigeria. The.Folake! describes her genre as Afro-Rock/Electro-House - fusion of her musical influences, combined with her own natural musical style.

Ghanaian Actress Blasts Movie Makers!

Just as many industrial players have started complaining about the plodding fall of the movie industry, most of the movie stars who took a French leave are also coming back into the scene with the hope that their coming back will help raise the industry.

Not too Long ago Adjetey Anan and Kafui Danku announced their coming back into the movie industry after going out of the country for individual personal businesses.

This time around Soraya Mensah who went out of the scenes after picking up a special Award in the Fashion and Life Achievements Awards through the movie title scorned has announced a comeback into the scene after being spotted at Venus Films office this month.

In a chat with Soraya, she revealed to the media that she went out of the scenes for many reasons, but she is back due to the calls she is getting from her fans.

“Many of my fans will bear with me that even at the time of my pregnancy; I tried my best to accept some scripts. It got to a point that I had to brake for some time since I had many loads on me” she added

When we asked her what she thinks about the movie industry, she revealed that although many people are blaming the gradual collapse of the industry on the type of stories our producers are telling for their films, she thinks the industry not having lots of stars is also another factor the industrial players have to look at.

She added that with the experience she has gained in the industry , she will advice that film producers should try and give upcoming movie stars enough motivation, by giving them their script in time,” they should not be frustrating them in any way so the job can be so easy for them “ she noted

Explaining what she meant by frustrating, she stated that most of the time when the film producers are casting, they don’t consider the upcoming ones and by so doing they don’t give them enough time to practice their script in any way.

“When you go to Hollywood, based on the majority of African film makers who want to reach in their movie career, they really have time to train upcoming movie stars and even to the extent of training the professionals also, there are lots of stars in Hollywood who didn’t play any major role but were able to get to the peak in their career because lots of time went into shooting their scenes “she lamented

“so to me personally , I think for us to make more stars we need to first consider giving the upcoming ones good opportunity , being it minor or major role and lots of time should go into shooting their scenes” she suggested

Photos: Akon Visits P-Square In Lagos

P-Sqaure are definitely living the life. As they say, Twins mostly comes with HUGE luck. I’m sure I would be the most happiest guy in the world if a superstar like Akon pays me a surprise visit. Who won’t be? We got hold of pictures of Akon with the twins at the Square Ville (P-Square’s Home) In Lagos. It seems Akon just love their friendship. Africa at it’s PEAK. Check out the pics below.
