Parents of Madonna's new 'boyfriend' give consent to relationship despite 36-year age gap

The parents of Madonna’s reported new 25-year-old boyfriend have spoken out about the relationship, saying “love doesn’t have an age range when you’re consenting adults”.

The 61-year-old singer and dancer Ahlamalik Williams were spotted embracing on a balcony in Miami last week. However, there has been no confirmation that the pair are an item.

But this now appears to be the case after Williams’ parents have gone public to give their consent.
Drue and Laurie Williams, who say they are fans of Madonna’s music, have no issue with the couple’s 36-year age gap.

Speaking of meeting the Queen of Pop, Mr Williams, 59, told The Mirror: “She told us she is so much in love with him and that we didn’t have anything to worry about as she was going to take care of him.

“We know there’s a huge age gap between the two – 36 years. Madonna is two years older than me.

“I asked him how he feels about her and he says he has never been happier.”

How do you feel about Instagram's plan to start hiding the likes on posts starting today

How do you feel about Instagram

From today, Instagram will start a trial that hides the number of likes on the posts of users in the US. This has already been tested in Australia, Canada, Japan and a handful of other territories. If it works in the US, the change is expected to be rolled out globally, with users of Instagram all over the world having their number of likes hidden from their viewers.

According to Instagram, the decision to hide your number of likes from others is so that users can "focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get." Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said hiding the "like" feature will help people's well-being and health.

US Air Force's mysterious space plane lands after record 780 days in orbit

Image result for US Air Force's mysterious space plane lands after record 780 days in orbit

The US Air Force's X-37B space plane landed Sunday back on Earth after spending 780 days in orbit, the longest mission in the mysterious military test program's history.

The uncrewed plane, which looks like a small space shuttle, conducted in-orbit experiments that could then be brought back to Earth for examination, according to the Air Force.
The exact details of these experiments are a closely guarded secret. In a statement, the Air Force only revealed that the program "performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies."
This is the fifth X-37B space plane to be launched into orbit over the past decade, with each flight longer than its predecessor.
"Our team has been preparing for this event, and I am extremely proud to see their hard work and dedication culminate in today's safe and successful landing of the X-37B," said Brig. Gen. Doug Schiess in the statement released Sunday.
Each mission has been highly secretive, leading to public speculation that the planes could be used for spying activity or testing space weapons.

39 bodies found in a truck container in southeast England

Image result for 39 bodies found in a truck container in southeast England

Police have launched a murder investigation in southeast England after 39 people were found dead in a truck container at an Essex industrial park. One of the victims was in their teens.

Authorities believe the lorry originated from Bulgaria, entering the UK over the weekend.
"We are in the process of identifying the victims, however I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process," Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner said in a statement.
They have arrested a 25-year-old Northern Irish truck driver "on suspicion of murder," Essex Police said.
"We have arrested the lorry driver in connection with the incident who remains in police custody as our enquiries continue. I appreciate this cordon is going to disrupt the activity of local businesses in the area and we will work to ensure that disruption is kept as short as possible. We are working with Thurrock Council to mitigate against any impact our investigation scene will have locally, " Mariner added.

Adult Film Star Jessa Rhodes Says She’d Sleep With A Fan To Fulfill Their Fantasy

Adult Film Star Jessa Rhodes Says She'd Sleep With A Fan To Fulfill Their Fantasy

Porn star Jessa Rhodes has said she'd sleep with a fan to fulfill their fantasy.

In a Reddit AMA (ask me anything for those who aren't familiar), the adult film actress said she'd 'fulfil a fan's fantasy' and even told them how they can apply.
One fan asked Jessa: "Would you sleep with a fan to fulfill their fantasy? Asking for all of us."

And her reply was: "Actually yes! In fact people can enter my 'f***-a-fan' contest via my private Snapchat."

She also revealed the most dangerous thing she's ever done on set, saying that she once had to repeat an underwater scene so many times that she thought she was going to pass out.

When asked what her 'they don't pay me enough for this s***' moment was, she replied: "One time while shooting for Brazzers for Kirin Lee, I had to dive into a pool and swim from one end to another while wearing a robe that weighed me down. I had to do MANY takes because of technical difficulties. Every time I held my breath and resurfaced I thought I was going to pass out."

She also answered other questions, including one that she said made her cringe so badly that she paid to have the video back.

Hypersonic 'space plane' promises four-hour London to Sydney flights by 2030s

Sabre engine vehicle

Flight times from London to Sydney could be 80% shorter by the 2030s, should a hypersonic rocket engine being developed in the UK get off the ground. The UK Space Agency announced Tuesday at the UK Space Conference 2019 that it would be working more closely with the Australian Space Agency in an agreement dubbed a "world-first Space Bridge." The Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE) engine, from Oxfordshire-based Reaction Engines, looks to be the jewel in the crown of this new enterprise. "When we have brought the SABRE rocket engine to fruition, that may enable us to get to Australia in perhaps as little as four hours," said Graham Turnock, head of the UK Space Agency. "This is technology that could definitely deliver that.

We're talking the 2030s for operational service, and the work is already very advanced." Fans of supersonic flight have been yearning for a new way to break the sound barrier ever since Concorde stopped flying in 2003. In April 2019, Reaction Engines announced successful tests of a precooler, simulating conditions at Mach 3.3, or more than three times the speed of sound. That's more than 50% faster than the cruising speed of Concorde -- which used to make the journey between New York and Paris in around 3.5 hours -- and matches the speed record of the fastest jet aircraft ever made, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. The precooler tests took place at a testing facility at the Colorado Air and Space Port in the United States. At such high speeds, air flowing through the engine can reach incredibly high temperatures, which can potentially cause damage.

'10 Minutes Gone': Film Review

Bruce Willis and Michael Chiklis co-star in Brian A. Miller’s crime thriller about a botched bank heist that sets off a wave of bloody retribution. Boasting a synopsis stacked with keywords certain to deliver reliable hits from streaming platform searches, Brian A. Miller’s lightweight action vehicle 10 Minutes Gone makes only a perfunctory stop in theaters before finding a more appropriate niche on VOD. Miller has made a career out of directing aging action icons in a string of generic thrillers, including Backtrace (Sylvester Stallone), Reprisal (Bruce Willis) and The Prince (Willis again), although few of them rate much of a mention, and his latest feature looks unlikely to change that track record for the better. Rex (Willis) runs a handpicked crew that pulls bank robbery jobs for hire, although he keeps them at arm’s length so he doesn’t need to have any personal conversations other than on the phone, preferring to handle the business side of the operations.

His latest anonymous client needs a mysterious metal case extracted from an underground vault in Cincinnati, so Rex brings on safecracker Frank (Michael Chiklis) and his brother Joe (Tyler Jon Olson), along with weapons specialists Baxter (Swen Temmel) and Mitchell (John Hickman) and tech expert Griffin (Kyle Schmid) to take out the bank’s security system. Practically the only interesting thing about this hopelessly mismatched lineup entails predicting in what order they’ll all die, since their demise appears an almost foregone conclusion.

'Gemini Man': Film Review

Will Smith plays dual roles as both a veteran assassin and his younger clone in director Ang Lee's effects-heavy thriller. Will Smith co-stars opposite himself in Gemini Man, a rare detour into action-thriller terrain from Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi director Ang Lee. Playing an elite hit man drawn into a deadly showdown with his younger clone, this effects-heavy 3D spectacular features both Peter Jackson's Weta Digital and Hollywood sci-fi legend Douglas Trumbull in its vast creative credits pool. But the disappointing end result feels less than the sum of the talents involved, a weak script and thin high-concept plot only just held together by smart visual wizardry.

Languishing in development since the late 1990s, Gemini Man began life as a Disney property with the late Tony Scott initially set to direct. Various big stars were attached over the years including Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery. Now, after multiple rewrites and technical setbacks, the project finally comes to fruition as a vehicle for Smith to try and reboot his faltering action superstar status. Was it worth dusting off this clunky pre-millennial screenplay? Frankly, not really. Gemini Man is arguably a significant leap forward for visual effects but a backward step for gripping, sophisticated thrillers. Despite a few deftly handled set-piece action sequences, the formulaic screenplay, stock characters, leaden dialogue and wobbly accents feel gratingly amateurish in places.

UK PM faces calls to resign

As Westminster slowly returns to normal, talk is turning to what happens next.

As things stand: Parliament was not officially suspended; Brexit is happening on October 31; Parliament has passed a law instructing Boris Johnson to request a Brexit extension and avoid a no-deal Brexit; Johnson says he won't.

So Brexit becomes a game of chicken.

We know that Johnson wants an early election, as does his rival, Jeremy Corbyn.

Where they differ is on whether that happens before Brexit has happened, or after it has been extended to avoid a no-deal exit.

Corbyn has two options: call for a vote of no confidence in Johnson's government or keep applying pressure on the Prime Minister hoping he will resign.

Both options are risky as they could lead to Johnson simply sitting tight and watching a no-deal Brexit happen by default.

A bank mistakenly put $120,000 into a couple's account. They spent it, police say

Image result for A bank mistakenly put $120,000 into a couple's account. They spent it, police say

A Pennsylvania couple is facing felony theft charges after their bank accidentally put $120,000 in their account, and the couple spent most of it instead of contacting the bank, police said.

Robert and Tiffany Williams of Montoursville are also facing overdraft fees from the bank of about $107,000, according to the criminal complaint filed in the Lycoming County magisterial district court.
In an interview with law enforcement, Tiffany Williams said the money was spent on an SUV, a camper, two four wheelers and a car trailer, among other things, according to an affidavit.
The bank error occurred May 31 when a customer in Georgia made a deposit of $120,000, and the BB&T Bank teller entered a wrong account number. When the customer contacted the bank to ask about the missing deposit, investigators discovered the funds had gone into the Williams' joint account, the affidavit said.
"While we can't comment on the specifics of this issue due to client privacy practices, we always work as quickly as possible to address any issue that affects our clients," Brian Davis, a spokesman for BB&T, told CNN in a statement.
"We're also continuously working to enhance our client service and operating procedures to provide the best client experience possible."

Fast food may contribute to teen depression, study says

Image result for Fast food may contribute to teen depression

Preteens are known for their defiant attitudes and dramatic mood swings, but over the last decade a much more disturbing characteristic has been increasing: depression.

A new study finds that one culprit may be a high fast-food, low plant-based diet. When researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham analyzed urine from a group of middle schoolers, they found high levels of sodium and low levels of potassium.

"High sodium, you've got to think of highly processed food," said lead author Sylvie Mrug, chair of the psychology department at UAB. "This includes fast food, frozen meals and unhealthy snacks."
Low potassium, Mrug added, is an indication of a diet that lacks healthy fruits and vegetables that are rich in potassium, such as beans, sweet potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, bananas, oranges, avocados, yogurt and even salmon.
The study also found that higher urine levels of sodium, and potassium at baseline, predicted more signs of depression a year and a half later, even after adjusting for variables such as blood pressure, weight, age and sex.

Twitter removes nearly 1,000 accounts tied to China's campaign against Hong Kong protesters

Image result for Twitter removes nearly 1,000 accounts tied to China's campaign against Hong Kong protesters

Twitter has removed nearly 1,000 accounts and suspended thousands of others tied to a campaign by the Chinese government against protesters in Hong Kong, the company announced on Monday.

Twitter disclosed a “significant state-backed information operation” originating from within the People’s Republic of China (PRC) targeting the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. It removed 936 accounts and suspended approximately 200,000 accounts its investigation found were illegitimate.

“Covert, manipulative behaviors have no place on our service – they violate the fundamental principles on which our company is built,” Twitter said in a statement.

The company released an archive of offending tweets and accounts, many of which accused protesters of violence and being sponsored by western governments. “We don’t want you radical people in Hong Kong,” one deleted tweet said.

In addition, Twitter said it was banning all advertising from state-controlled news media entities. “Any affected accounts will be free to continue to use Twitter to engage in public conversation, just not our advertising products,” it said, adding that the ban would not apply to entities that are taxpayer-funded but independent.

As the climate warms, how much, and how quickly, will Earth's glaciers melt?

Image result for As the climate warms, how much, and how quickly, will Earth's glaciers melt?

"If we don't have it, we don't need it," pronounces Daniel Fagre as we throw on our backpacks. We're armed with crampons, ice axes, rope, GPS receivers, and bear spray to ward off grizzlies, and we're trudging toward Sperry Glacier in Glacier National Park, Montana. I fall in step with Fagre and two other research scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey Global Change Research Program. They're doing what they've been doing for more than a decade: measuring how the park's storied glaciers are melting.

So far, the results have been positively chilling. When President Taft created Glacier National Park in 1910, it was home to an estimated 150 glaciers. Since then the number has decreased to fewer than 30, and most of those remaining have shrunk in area by two-thirds. Fagre predicts that within 30 years most if not all of the park's namesake glaciers will disappear.

"Things that normally happen in geologic time are happening during the span of a human lifetime," says Fagre. "It's like watching the Statue of Liberty melt."

Scientists who assess the planet's health see indisputable evidence that Earth has been getting warmer, in some cases rapidly. Most believe that human activity, in particular the burning of fossil fuels and the resulting buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, have influenced this warming trend. In the past decade scientists have documented record-high average annual surface temperatures and have been observing other signs of change all over the planet: in the distribution of ice, and in the salinity, levels, and temperatures of the oceans.

Nigerian medical doctor stabbed to death by Ukrainian lady with her father's help

Nigerian medical doctor stabbed to death by Ukrainian lady with her father

A young Nigerian medical doctor has died after being stabbed by a lady from Ukraine with the support of her father. Gbolade Ibukun Ejemai was stabbed by a lady identified as Victoria Popravko after which her father hit him on the head with a hammer in Ukraine. According to reports, Gbolade was in a relationship with Victoria, a mother-of-two. They got into an argument and she went for a weapon. Narrating how Gbolade was stabbed to death, Dr. Ajayi, a friend of the deceased, said: "Victoria Popravko invited Gbolade Ejemai over to her house on on Friday, August 8, 2019, to talk things over in the morning. "They’ve had some prior discussions which nobody really knew for sure as they were in a relationship.

He went over to hers, it wasn’t his first time visiting her but turned out to be his last. "They got into some arguments and one thing led to another, she stabbed him in his abdomen, twice, puncturing a couple of organs and landing him in coma. He lost about 40% of his blood volume and that led him to a very critical condition. "He was taken in for the first surgery on the same day and we waited almost 24 hours for him to get conscious. On Sunday, he opened his eyes and was able to recognize people. "Then he told his side of the story about how Victoria’s father realized that he wasn’t dead after the stab wound and went ahead to hit him with a hammer on his head. "We didn’t know about the hammer and its impact until Gbolade himself woke up and spoke up. We were hoping for a miracle and praying he got better until Monday when he developed a complication and had to be operated on the second time "He was taken in for the second surgery and it went well.

He didn’t come conscious though. By Tuesday afternoon, he gave up the ghost." Victoria was arrested at the scene of the incident but has now been released on bail less than 24 hours later because "she had two kids to cater for" and they couldn’t keep her until the investigation was done and over with Lamenting the injustice, Dr. Ajayi said: "This is unfair judgement because she was caught at a murder scene. It is a serious case and we need to put our voices together to avenge our brother’s death. We will not be silenced! We will not be cheated! Gbolade deserves justice and we can make it happen."

Philadelphia police shooting suspect has 'extensive' criminal history, commissioner says

Maurice Hill surrendered to authorities just after midnight after the shooting and hours-long standoff.

The man accused of opening fire on Philadelphia police officers, wounding six and triggering an hours-long standoff that stretched into the night, has been arrested at least a dozen times since turning 18 -- a rap sheet the city's top cop described as an "extensive" criminal history.

With his hands in the air and a police light illuminating his every movement, alleged gunman Maurice Hill, 36, surrendered to authorities just after midnight Thursday, exiting the north Philadelphia neighborhood home he'd barricaded himself in.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, who said he spent hours Wednesday negotiating with Hill over the phone, said the situation that unfolded "could have been far worse."

“I am surprised he came out because he was indicating to some that he wasn’t going to do that and that he was not going back,” to prison, Ross told reporters early Thursday regarding some of Hill's alleged statements. “Many of you have found out about his history. It’s very significant. In fact, he told me on the phone, he used the word ‘extensive,’ he had an extensive criminal history and that he knew the system. This is why he was making the outlandish demands he was making.”

Court documents obtained by us show Hill's lengthy criminal history, including a least a dozen arrests since he turned 18.

The 36-year-old has been in and out of prison since 2002 after convictions for such crimes as illegal possession of guns and aggravated assault, according to the documents obtained.

MILEY Cyrus and Brody Jenner's ex Kaitlynn Carter couldn't take their hands off each other after the singer split from Liam Hemsworth.

Miley, 26, married actor Liam in December while Kaitlynn, 30, wed Kylie Jenner's half-brother in Indonesia last summer.

Now it seems the women have moved on as sensational pictures show them kissing and cuddling on holiday in Lake Como, Italy, over the weekend.

The pair lay sprawled on a mattress overlooking the lake and their legs were entwined as they snogged and canoodled in the sizzling heat.

The women were inseparable for the rest of the afternoon, frolicking in their private pool not far from where George Clooney owns a £26 million mansion.

Miley wore a black bikini and sunglasses as Kaitlynn contrasted her dressed in white and with a straw hat.

News of the shock break-up emerged hours after the Wrecking Ball singer shared a picture on Instagram without her wedding ring

LION OF DUTY Met Police ‘poster girl’ faces sack for ‘having sex’ on Nigerian Big Brother #Bigbrothernaija #bbnaija2019

Khafi Kareem promoted female and black recruitment in the force  Khafi defied bosses' orders to appear on the Nigerian reality show

POLICE poster girl Khafi Kareem defied her bosses to appear in a series of steamy romps on TV.

The PC, who once stood alongside Met Commissioner Cressida Dick to promote female and black recruitment, was told not to take part in Nigeria’s Big Brother.

But the 29-year-old had already been granted unpaid leave and joined the show, where she has romped three times with businessman Ekpata Gedoni, 31.

Their romance has viewers gripped but she is facing an investigation by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards.

One colleague said: “She’s a serving British police officer — it’s outrageous. She asked permission to go on the show but, when her request was refused, she went anyway.

“Her out-of-office email reply blatantly says that she is away from work, yet no one does anything.

“Other officers working with her are furious that she can just disobey orders then swan off the Africa and tarnish the reputation of the force.”

Former bit-part actress and shop assistant Khafi joined the Met as a PC based at Lambeth station in 2015 after working part-time as a special constable for four years.

She was inspired to sign up after a 16-year-old pal was stabbed to death but has spoken out against police stop-and-search tactics.

The PC's Met colleagues have been left unimpressed by her antics

Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘teen sex slave’ appears to attend Naomi Campbell’s VIP birthday with paedo in disturbing new pics

A girl who appears to be Virginia Roberts with Naomi Campbell and Flavio Briatore at a VIP bash in 2001

NEWLY unearthed photos appear to show one of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged sex slaves attending Naomi Campbell’s glitzy birthday party in St Tropez.

The disturbing snaps show a young blonde teenage girl - thought to be Virginia Roberts - being paraded at the glam French Riviera bash in 2001.

Representatives for Campbell denied she was close friends with Epstein - and said that he had only been invited to her birthday party by her then boyfriend, Flavio Briatore.

There is no suggestion the supermodel or her guests knew who Ms Roberts was - nor had any knowledge of Epstein's behaviour.

In the pics, the girl can even be seen wearing the same style of cropped white top and multicoloured trousers worn by Roberts in her infamous photo with Prince Andrew.

In that 2001 snap, the Duke of York grins as he grasps then-17-year-old Ms Roberts by her bare midriff at the home of Brit socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.

It was there that Ms Roberts claims Epstein "lent" her out to have sex with the royal - which he has vehemently denied.

Ms Maxwell - paedo billionaire Epstein's alleged "madam" - can also be seen in the bombshell pics from the exclusive St Tropez event.

9 strategies and tactics to outsmart the Instagram algorithm

Image result for instagram algorithm may 2019
Based on what we know about how the algorithm works and what we’ve seen firsthand at Sprout, growing your reach and engagement is possible in the face of the algorithm.

Below is a snapshot of the strategies and tactics you should employ if you want to guarantee that more people see your content.

1. Step up your photo quality
According to Instagram themselves, ranking higher in your followers’ feeds goes hand in hand with creating “great content.”

No-brainer, right? Except what constitutes “good content” is in the eye of the beholder and doesn’t give us many specifics.

Regardless, there’s no denying that the most-liked and shared content on Instagram is oftentimes visually striking.

Bold colors. Breathtaking landscapes. The sort of stuff that gets people to stop in their tracks and smash “Like.”

If you’re already creating eye-popping content, you’re ahead of the curve.

And if not, you may want to think about producing some professional visuals from time to time. Even if you’re in a seemingly “boring” industry, high-quality photos are an expectation rather than an exception to the rule.

Also, consider that there are tons of Instagram apps out there like VSCO which can give your imagery a more professional vibe on a budget.

NASA's First Planetary Defense Technology Demonstration to Collide with Asteroid in 2022

diagram of spacecraft impacting smaller of two asteroids

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) – NASA’s first mission to demonstrate a planetary defense technique – will get one chance to hit its target, the small moonlet in the binary asteroid system Didymos. The asteroid poses no threat to Earth and is an ideal test target: measuring the change in how the smaller asteroid orbits about the larger asteroid in a binary system is much easier than observing the change in a single asteroid's orbit around the Sun. Work is ramping up at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, and other locations across the country, as the mission heads toward its summer 2021 launch – and attempts to pull off a feat so far seen only in science fiction films.

Observing Didymos

To navigate the DART spacecraft to its intended target – a binary asteroid that consists of a small moon (Didymos B) orbiting a larger body (Didymos A) – scientists need to understand how the system behaves. Scientists have been making efforts to observe Didymos from Earth since 2015, and now, an international campaign coordinated by Northern Arizona University’s Cristina Thomas, DART’s Observing Working Group Lead, is making critical observations using powerful telescopes worldwide to understand the state of the asteroid system before DART reaches it. Current observations will help researchers to better understand the extent of the impact made when DART slams into its target – Didymos B – in September 2022.

The most recent observation campaign took place on Cerro Paranal in northern Chile, where scientists viewed Didymos using the Very Large Telescope, which is run by the European Southern Observatory. The “VLT” comprises four telescopes, each with 8.2-meter mirrors; two of them were used in the recent observations.

Epstein abuse probe steadfast despite his death

Epstein probe will continue despite death: officials

The FBI and the Justice Department's inspector general's office will investigate how Jeffrey Epstein died in an apparent suicide Saturday, while the probe into sexual abuse allegations against the well-connected financier remains ongoing, officials said.

Epstein, accused of orchestrating a sex-trafficking ring and sexually abusing dozens of underage girls, had been taken off suicide watch before he killed himself in a New York jail, a person familiar with the matter said.

Attorney General William Barr, in announcing the investigation, said he was "appalled" to learn of Epstein's death while in federal custody.

"Mr. Epstein's death raises serious questions that must be answered," Barr said in a statement.

Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Fire officials received a call at 6:39 a.m. Saturday that Epstein was in cardiac arrest, and he was pronounced dead at New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital.

Epstein, 66, had been denied bail and faced up to 45 years behind bars on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges unsealed last month. He had pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial.

The federal investigation into the allegations remains steadfast, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said. He noted in a statement Saturday that the indictment against Epstein includes a conspiracy charge, suggesting others could face charges in the case.

Epstein had been placed on suicide watch and given daily psychiatric evaluations after an incident a little over two weeks ago in which he was found with bruising on his neck, according to the person familiar with the matter who wasn't authorized to discuss it publicly. It hasn't been confirmed whether the injury was self-inflicted or the result of an assault.

From Charlie Gard to separating conjoined twins: the agony of life and death decisions on the hospital frontline

Conjoined twins Marieme and Ndeye being treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital

The sort of impossible ethical dilemma thrown up at the start of a new BBC documentary on Great Ormond Street Hospital aired tonight, is something to which Dr Joe Brierley has become well-accustomed.

The programme follows a set of conjoined twins, Marieme and Ndeye, who have defied all medical expectations to survive to two-and-a-half-years-old. The twins are conjoined in a certain way meaning they have shared circulation but separate hearts and lungs. While Ndeye’s vital organs are healthy, Marieme’s heart is desperately weak. If she dies, her stronger sister will die with her.

As their health deteriorates the hospital – and their father, Ibrahima – are forced to discuss whether or not they should operate to separate them: perhaps prolonging one twin's life but almost certainly ending another.

As chairman of the hospital’s ethics committee, Dr Brierley, a consultant in paediatric intensive care, leads a series of discussions with colleagues and the father of the girls to determine the best way forward. It is tense, painful viewing as they consider an effective death sentence.

“As a father, how do you get your head around the fact people are even thinking like that?” says Dr Brierley, 50, himself a father of four children, one of whom has suffered their own health complications. “If a decision like this doesn’t weigh on your mind you’re in the wrong job.”
