J Cole, who was in South Africa to perform at the Big Brother Stargame launch last night, he proved he has star quality not only in his performance but in his commendable professional behavior and attitude.
J Cole is the first artist to be signed to Jay Z ‘s record label Roc Nation and he has a growing career and fan base all over the world, including South Africa.
He was scheduled to arrive a day before for his Big Brother Stargame performance however, he only arrived the morning of the show. He made sure to apologise to the media and his fans for the delay. He went on to explain that even though his career is growing, he still needs to work hard on it.
“My dream is to sellout stadiums and big arenas like Jay Z and many other rock artists. I want to be doing what I’m doing for a long time, I’m still aiming for a higher bar,” said the 27-year-old star.
He says that before he was signed to Roc Nation, he used to literally stalk Jay Z in order to give him a demo and he was rejected a number of times until his perseverance finally paid off.
“I know what it takes to work hard to get the music out there. I had to move from my hometown of North Carolina to New York to get close to the music and even though I faced struggles, I managed to achieve my goal. That’s why if someone gives me their demo I listen to it. If they have something good going on I do what I can to help them or to direct them to people who can help. We all deserve to be given a hand and the fact that I take their demo and listen to it gives them a boost,” he explained.
The rapper who can also play the piano and violin spoke about the rumors that are doing the rounds about him and Rihanna.
“Every time I hear that I’m not bothered. The rumors give me and my music publicity so I am not complaining about that exposure,” he chuckled.
After wooing the crowds with performances at the Big Brother Stargame launch, J Cole attended the after party at Hush nightclub in Johannesburg where he made the dreams of many of his fans come true by posing for pictures with them.
“He is such a cool guy, I spoke to him as I was about to take a picture and he listened, he didn’t just rush to get the picture taken and move on. He actually listened to what I had to say. That meant a lot to me,” said Tariro Jokonya, one of his avid fans.
He says as much as he had a great time performing at Big Brother Stargame, he plans to return to South Africa and do shows on a larger scale.
“I would like to come again for maybe a week or so. This is my first time in Africa and I am very humbled by the welcome I’ve received,” he added.
