The Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation’s (MCADF) has established The Maia Chung Autism Scholarship programme, which is geared toward assisting a Jamaican family living with the disorder. The scholarship will assist with the education, training and therapeutically needs for the recipient. This programme will give a scholarship value J$40,000 annually; the first scholarship will be given away in September of 2015.
This endowment is endorsed by the Ministry of Education and will be promoted through its network of educators and is available for students at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of the education system.
The official launch of this scholarship took place at the Ministry of Education’s Heroes Circle Head Office in Kingston August 26, 2015, where the Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites deliver the keynote address and officially launch the MCADF Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship is endorsed and will be publicized by the Ministry of Education to its teacher’s network, via school bulletins consistently. The scholarship is available at the primary/secondary and tertiary levels.
In its seven years of operation, the Foundation’s team has discovered that rural penetration in terms of Autism awareness is still very poor. As a Non-Profit and Non- Governmental Organisation, the MCADF has discerned that by asking teachers across the nation to identify students on the autism spectrum, this process will lead to a heightened awareness and more positive actions for the growth and development of children with autism.
Autism is a fast growing developmental disability in need of proper attention from citizens and states. If the educators become more aware of the persons living with Autism, it is anticipated that this will spur constructive actions in helping affected Jamaicans cope with the disorder, as the numbers continue to grow regionally and internationally. There is no identified cure globally, so MCADF continues to lead efforts that provide awareness of this developmental disorder. Our goal is to bring happiness to the lives of children with Autism and their families.
