Mother’s day special : “Sweet Mother” by Prince Nico Mbarga

Sweet mother by Prince Nico Mbarga was, and still is a huge hit across the African continent. The West African countries of Nigeria and Cameroon, whose colonial histories are intertwined, lay claim to the popular highlife musician. Born January 1, 1950 in Nigeria, to a Nigerian mother and a Cameroonian father, he recorded Sweet Mother in 1976 with his band Rocafil Jazz. Known for his fashion flair, Mbarga died in a motorcycle accident on June 24, 1997.

Although it’s recorded in Pidgin English, any English speaker should have an easy time of deciphering the meaning of the song’s heartfelt words. Go ahead – It’s easier than you think and the lyrics below should help! Oh, and contrary to what the album cover may show, his band was not comprised of underage boys.

De Afro Drum Beat wish every mother out there a BiG fat H.A.P.P.Y. M.O.T.H.E.R.S. .D.A.Y.!!
